Be Careful While Driving In Neighborhoods With School Starting

Comments Off

With Summer ending and Fall approaching the school year is starting. It is important to be on the lookout for children while you are driving through rural neighborhoods. This is especially true just before and after the school day. Also, obeying posted speed limits in neighborhoods will reduce the chance of accidents.

On August 29, 2011, a nine-year-old boy was struck by a pickup truck in Kulpmont, Pennsylvania. The young boy was still listed in critical condition at Geisinger Medical Center. Michael A. Nahodil, 9, was struck by a truck driven by Benjamin Britton, 25, of Mount Carmel. He is in critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit and is expected to survive, but suffered a fractured skull, broken ribs, a punctured lung and internal bleeding, which has required four blood transfusions. His pelvis is broken in five places and he may also have a broken arm and femur.

According to published reports, the crash occurred shortly after school on South 10th Street between Scott and First streets. Michael was playing with his 12-year-old brother, best friend and at least six other neighborhood children after the first day of school, only a few blocks away from his home at 1130 Scott St., near Nolan’s Lumber. Witnesses said that that Michael started to walk across the street to pet a cat being held by a girl. He paused between two cars to look for oncoming traffic and continued on. At the same time, a truck driven by Benjamin Britton, 25, of Mount Carmel, came “flying” around the corner and struck Michael.
