How Dangerous Are Pennsylvania Bridges?

Pennsylvania State Police are investigating a tragic accident which killed a and and a young boy in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. This is a small town located in Central Pennsylvania. The accident occurred on a bridge which was constructed with no median divider. Is a high volume bridge dangerous without a divider? Below is a report on the accident and investigation.

The News Item, out of Central Pennsylvania, is reporting on a Northumberland man and a 3-year-old boy who were killed in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday night July 17, 2012 on the Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Kirk Mahaffey, 22, was pronounced dead at Sunbury Community Hospital following the 8 p.m. accident. The toddler, a passenger of Mahaffey's vehicle, was airlifted to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was pronounced dead.

Troopers identified the elder Mahaffey, but not the child; however, family and friends identified the child as Mahaffey's son, Mayson, on numerous online postings.

According to troopers, Brian Glass, 24, of Port Trevorton, was driving a maroon Jeep Liberty in the left lane of eastbound traffic on the bridge when the vehicle swerved into the westbound lane and struck Mahaffey's vehicle head on.

Glass and a passenger, Cody Glass, 19, also of Port Trevorton, each suffered moderate injuries and were transported to an area medical facility for treatment. They were wearing seatbelts, troopers said.

The road was closed more than four hours while emergency responders worked at the scene. It reopened at 12:42 a.m. Wednesday.

AREA Services, Americus Ambulance, Friendship Fire Company 522 and fire companies from Shamokin Dam and Upper Augusta Township also responded.

If you have any information on the accident contact the Pennsylvania State Police.

Is this the type of accident which calls out for the Governor to FINALLY push for a transportation bill?
