Will Legislation To Expand Sunday Beer Sales Lead To More Injuries?

Comments Off

Do you think that doubling the amount of beers sales on Sundays and allowing alcohol to be served as early as 9 a.m. on Sunday will lead to more injuries, especially fatal traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers?

The Pennsylvania Legislature passed a bill yesterday, December 7, 2011 which will expand the time that vendors can sell beer on Sundays in Pennsylvania. The Governor is expected to sign the bill into law. One provision of the bill allows beer distributors to do business on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. — more than doubling the noon-to-5 p.m. period allowed by current law. Another provision allows restaurants that serve brunch or breakfast prior to 11 a.m. on Sundays to begin serving alcoholic beverages as early as 9 a.m.

One view would be that this law will lead to an increase in drunk drivers on the roads on Sundays on the central Pennsylvania roads near and around Harrisburg. This would obviously increase the chance of a serious car accident and injuries.
