Whiteout On Interstate 80 Leads To Weekend Wrecks, Crashes And Fatalities In Pennsylvania

Comments Off

Even with the unseasonably warm winter, remember to drive carefully in snowy conditions. This is especially true when they occur all of a sudden.

According to the Meadville Tribune, this past Saturday’s wintry weather caused major pileups on two of Pennsylvania’s interstate highways, including three highway deaths in Venango County. A 13-mile stretch of Interstate 80 in Venango County between the Emlenton and Barkeyville exits was closed after a series of snowy chain-reaction crashes involving at least 20 vehicles left three people dead.

In Mercer County, no fatalities were reported by Pennsylvania State Police, but 15 wreckers were needed to remove 30 damaged passenger vehicles and two commercial ones from a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 79 in Deer Creek Township. The interstate was closed for nearly three hours and a school bus was needed to transport stranded motorists out of the crash area, according to state police at Mercer.

The Interstate 80 wrecks began about 2:20 p.m. Saturday and closed down the highway. The vehicles either crashed into one another or into a median strip and there are three confirmed fatalities.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 79 — between the Sandy Lake/Greenville exit in Mercer County and the Geneva/Cochranton exit in Crawford County — were closed down Saturday afternoon.
