Farm accidents are a growing problem in the United States. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the number of fatal agricultural accidents has grown more than 15 percent over the past two years. Exactly 127 people lost their lives in farm accidents in 2009 and 156 died in similar accidents the next year.
More recently, a teen suffered serious injuries after being hit by a piece of farm equipment while he was riding his bike along in Cumberland County. According to Channel 21 News, the accident occurred on Wertzville Road in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania.
Reports indicate that the teen was riding his bike near a truck pulling an antique tractor when a sickle attached to the tractor fell and struck the 17-year-old teen. Although the boy was conscious and breathing at the scene of the accident, the piece of equipment left the teen with severe lacerations, leading to the young man requiring an airlift to a local hospital to receive treatment for life-threatening injuries.
Police say they will continue to investigate the possible caused of the incident.
