Always be careful and drive with extra caution in a construction zone. Always anticipate anything, even the unexpected and watch.
According to police and published reports from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, a woman was struck and killed on October 13, 2011 while exiting her vehicle on Route 30 after being involved in a separate accident.
The accident occured in Hellam Tounwship on eastbound Route 30 over the Susquehanna River where traffic was limited to the left lane because of construction work. Jackie Lease was stopped in the left lane just east of the Cool Springs Road overpass when her vehicle was involved in an accident with Helen Hammes’ car. Hammes then got out of her vehicle to speak to Lease. At that point, an eastbound pickup truck approached the crash scene and swerved to the left, onto the median, in an attempt to avoid striking the two vehicles.
The truck, however, struck Hammes, then broadsided the Lease vehicle breaking Lease’s ankle. Hammes was killed by blunt force trauma in the accident.
