As emergency personnel in Whitehall, Pennsylvania were trying to clear the road from one accident, their emergency vehicle was struck by a suspected drunk driver. According to Allentown paper The Morning Call, the accident happened on March 11, 2012 on Route 22 when a suspected drunk driver struck the open driver’s door and drove past signs and construction cones and flares that were set up. The driver then struck two other cars, injuring three people.

The charges for drunk driving are still pending against the driver. If found guilty, he will be held criminally responsible for these negligent actions. The National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported 10,839 fatalities from alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in 2009. These fatalities accounted for 32 % of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the United States.

Of particular concern is the increase in alcohol-related crashes on holiday weekends. For instance, St. Patrick’s Day has also become very dangerous because of the large volume of drunk drivers that night. In 2009, the NHSTA reported 103 crash fatalities that day and 37 % involved alcohol-impaired drivers.
